As our good friend Sean Penn – a.k.a. Ned Stark –  would say: ‘One does not simply leave Tuscany without tasting one of their magnificent Chianti’s’. Don’t mind if we do dear Mr. Stark, and why not combine drinking wine with the discovery of an old 12th-century castle and other Tuscan Specialties?

While planning our road trip in Tuscany, we checked out a lot of wineries in the area. The possibilities were endless, but we wanted a little bit more than just your average wine-tasting. We received a golden tip from TripAdvisor, and so we discovered the ‘Castello di Verrazano’-vineyard.

The Castle of Verrazzano is located in Greve in Chianti, in the heart of the ‘Chianti Classico’ area, between Florence and Siena. The Castle became the property of the Verrazzano family in the VII century. Giovanni da Verrazzano, the navigator and discoverer of the bay of New York and of the majority of the East coast of nowadays U.S. was born there in 1485.

There is a great tradition of winemaking here: the “vineyards situated in Verrazzano” are mentioned in a manuscript which dates back to 1150. Can you imamgine how my inner-history-nerd  made a little happy dance?

We booked the full-option ‘Wine & Food Experience’, which consists of a guided visit to the Castle’s gardens and historical ageing cellars followed by a guided tasting of a selection of their best wines and lunch with gastronomic specialities from all over Tuscany.

In my opinion one of the best wine tasting experiences I’ve ever had. The food pairing was exquisite, and the information we received concerning the wines themselves were from a superior level. We even ordered some wines from Verrazzano (the Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG & Vinsanto “Il Canonico Lodovico”) when we were back at home! Just make sure you get back safely – and not too drunk – after the tasting .. Whoops!
