When in Tuscany, one does not simply leave without tasting some of its excellent food or wine. Period. Christophe and me just love to literally taste a bit of the local culinary specialties. We already had an awesome experience a few years ago when visiting the Chianti-area, but this year, we were closer to the Montalcino & Moltepulciano vineyards. Do those names ring any bells?

No? I’m pretty sure you heard about the Brunello de Montalcino though, because it is one of the most prestigious wine-area’s in Italy, and the whole world. It is famous for its specific taste, acidity and complexity, but because of the high selling price that comes with that fame, Christophe and me never took the opportunity to taste them. That’s how we wound up in Fattoria dei Barbi, a highly-renowed address in the area inhabited by the Colombini-family.

The Colombi-family have owned land at Montalcino since 1352, but they acquired the Fattoria dei Barbi in the late 18th century and started producing Brunello in 1892. Today, it sells over ten different wines, in all kinds of price ranges.

There are three excellent reasons for a visit to Fattoria dei Barbi. One is to taste the wines of course, another is the excellent restaurant located on the premises and the main reason, for us, was the tour in the old, yet still operational wine production-cellars. This tour introduces you to the history of the Colombini family and its collection of ancient barrels and vintage bottles of wine.

After the tour, we got to taste six different wines in two sets of tasting-experiences. We chose the 8 euro  (Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Rosso di Montalcino DOC Colombini, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG ) and 12 euro (Rosso di Montalcino DOC Colombini, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Vigna del Fiore) suggestions. We took home three bottles of the Rosso di Montalcino DOC Colombini afterwards, so we can tell you: their wine production skills are definitely on point!

A highly recommended stop for all those who are visiting this precious corner of Tuscany and love wine and food just as much as we do! Oh, and do try their home-made olive oil! It’s delicious!
